A Week in Basque Country
Our
traditional Basque Chalet is situated at the meeting point of three distinct
cultures--French, Spanish and Basque--and sits on a cliff overlooking one of Europe's
finest surfing beaches, with a majestic view sweeping from the foothills of the Pyrenees
across the Bay of Biscay into Spain. Through the course of your stay, we will visit
the chic fishing village of St. Jean-de-Luz, Medieval Bayonne, and the turn-of-the-century
resort of Biarritz. We'll also foray across the border into Spain, taking in the 'tapas'
capital of San Sebastian, and heading into the hills to visit charming Basque villages and
market towns.
Jamie and
Dennis have a wealth of stories about the fascinating Basques, from their mysterious
origins, their impenetrable language, their politics, traditions, and of course, their
sports (Jai Alai, rugby and throwing heavy objects among them). Ellie's cuisine is
inspired by the shopping baskets from all three cultures. And Dennis' wine cellar
moves into new realms with exciting discoveries both French and Spanish.
